QuakeIndex

An earthquake card for your website

Put the latest earthquakes near your town on your own site: a local newsroom's weather page, a school's emergency page, a neighborhood association or a city's preparedness page. The card shows the 30-day activity strip, so a reader can see at a glance whether this week is busier than usual here, then the most recent quakes with their magnitude, distance and local time. It updates itself from the USGS feed, which QuakeIndex reads every 30 seconds.

It is free, it needs no key and no sign-up, and it sets no cookies, carries no ads and runs no analytics. The one condition is the credit line under the card: keep the link to the place's page on QuakeIndex, where your readers can see the full record.

The code

With the loader (sizes itself to fit)

<div data-quakeindex="/near/california/los-angeles/">
  <a href="https://quakeindex.com/near/california/los-angeles/">Earthquakes near Los Angeles, CA</a> from QuakeIndex
</div>
<script async src="https://quakeindex.com/embed.js"></script>

Iframe only (for sites that strip scripts)

<iframe src="https://quakeindex.com/widget/near/california/los-angeles/" title="Earthquakes near Los Angeles, CA (QuakeIndex)"
  width="100%" height="547" loading="lazy" style="border:0;max-width:460px;border-radius:14px"></iframe>
<p><a href="https://quakeindex.com/near/california/los-angeles/">Earthquakes near Los Angeles, CA</a> from QuakeIndex</p>

Paste either one where the card should appear. The loader adds the card above the credit line and sets its height; several cards on one page need the script only once. The script is under 2 KB as sent, and the card loads lazily, so it costs your page nothing until a reader scrolls to it.

What the card shows

Magnitudes, locations and times are the USGS's, as the USGS publishes and revises them. Every card says when the feed was last checked; if that was more than ten minutes ago, the card says the list may be behind. The card describes earthquakes that have happened. It is not a warning service: for earthquake early warning, see ShakeAlert and the MyShake app.

Options

On the loader's <div>, or as a query on the iframe address:

data-count="8"?n=8How many quakes to list, 3 to 10. Five unless set.
data-min="1.5"?min=1.5List every quake of M1.5 or more, not only M2.5 or more.
